Week Nine: Shedding, Breakage & Length Retention

Hey Natural Beauties,

We would be fooling ourselves if we didn't admit that length retention and growth was not an integral part of our journey. We all want healthy hair and with healthy hair, comes growth. For inspiration, we have included a video of Kimmaytube's growth over her natural hair journey. She is truly a testament that afro-textured hair can grow long and beautiful.

It is evident that hair DOES grow, but some of us may get in the mindset that our hair is not growing. However, you should be happy to know that on average, our hair grows 1/4-1/2 inch every single month. What prevents us from seeing our growth is breakage. It is important to understand the difference between shedding and breakage because many people tend to confuse the two. On average, we can shed anywhere between 50-100 hairs a day. We should be concerned with breakage which usually takes the form of short hair strands without the white bulb on the end (this means it did not shed from the scalp)

You can find more information on shedding and breakage HERE and HERE!

Are any of you suffering from breakage? What are you doing to curb/stop it?

Week Eight: Moisture & Sealing & Second Check-In

Hey Natural Beauties,

You may or may not have known that afro textured hair is inherently dry. IT IS! We can't help that. However, there are ways to moisturize your hair and lock that moisture in for lasting, soft, and moisturized hair. You can remember when you were a child and your mom greased your scalp. Contrary to her belief, she wasn't "moisturizing" your hair. The NUMBER ONE moisturizer is water and products with water as its first ingredients are the best moisturizers for your hair. We would all like to believe that oils such as castor oil moisturize our hair, but they actually seal in moisture. Learning about the steps to moisturized and sealed hair will lessen fairy knots, curb dryness, and give you that touchable, soft hair you've always wanted.

Youtuber IslandGurl3601 of It's a Nautural Hair Thing! is here to help us break it down for you!

How do you moisturize your hair? Let us know!

Can you believe it's Week Eight and we are all still going strong? Over the last few weeks we have discussed everything from ingredients to deep conditioning and treatments. We want to find out how your hair has been doing! Have you seen improvements in your hair whether it be strength, elasticity, shine, etc. Tell us about it!

Week Seven: Deep Conditioning and Treatments

Hey Natural Beauties,

Whether you deep condition or protein treat your hair before or after you shampoo, you must know that these steps are very important in restoring the moisture and elasticity to your hair after the constant wear-and-tear caused by the weather, your manipulation, and other factors. You should be ideally deep conditioning your hair once a week and applying a protein treatment every 4-6 weeks, but it really depends on your lifestyle/health of your hair. Remember you have to create YOUR own regimen and figure out what works best for you and your hair.

You can create your own deep conditioners using conditioners you may already own and beefing them up with honey and penetrating oils such as olive and coconut oil. If you are not a mixologist, you can purchase commercial products as well.

Here is Youtuber Naptural85 discussing how to make and apply her homemade deep conditioners.

Don't forget treatments using a Bentonite Clay, Henna, and other ayurvedic powders for cleansing and conditioning. Here is youtuber Br0nzqt discussing some of these powders.

We hope this was enlightening!

What Deep Conditioners/Treatments have you used or tried? Do you make your own? Have you tried any powders?
